EMOTIONS AND ILLNESS

Repressing emotions can cause physical illness. Our bodies were not meant to hold on to and suppress intense emotion. Unresolved feelings create blockages in the body’s energy system which in turn weakens the immune system, and this can manifest as pain, or other physical symptoms. 95% of all illness has an emotional component. Every time we revisit the memory of a traumatic event from the past, our cellular memory responds and fills our bodies with hormones which affects our immune system. Your cells and your body respond to every thought you think, every emotion you have and every word you speak Energy has to move. If it is blocked due to your emotional disturbances the other parts do not get the energy in the way they should. Nutrient transport, respiration, detoxification, elimination, digestion, assimilation, hormone production and brain function become affected leading to a gradual degeneration in your system. This results in dis-ease. Cancer is found in people who carry deep anger for either themselves or resentment for other people and circumstances that occurred in the past. They carry hatred for a long period of time until it literally starts eating away at the body and manifests as cancer. Imbalance between your rational mind and your emotions will cause digestive disorders. Arthritis is bottled-up hurt. . Excessive or prolonged fear drains the Kidneys. Anger affects the Liver. Sadness affects the Lungs. Excessive anxiety causes spleen energy to stagnate. Your legs, calves and feet store your trauma, resentment, jealousy, and emotional pain of the past and present.
Being emotionally and mentally healthy doesn’t mean never going experiencing emotional problems. People with good emotional health have an ability to bounce back from adversity, trauma and stress. Don’t let stress and negative emotions build up. Learn to let go. Releasing old emotions will cause shifts in your energy fields and thus free up the energy blockages that you may have. Forgiveness is the master healer. Break the pattern of negative emotions. Release your inflexibility. The more you learn to love yourself, the easier it is to love others. Love is the most powerful energy of healing on earth.  Meditation is an ideal tool to achieve serenity. Thus the mind and the body are clearly connected and what we think affects how we feel and how we feel effects health.  We are blessed today with simple, inexpensive, techniques that can revolutionize our sense of wellness and shift the patterns that trap us in chronic illness.

Emotions and your Body: How being emotionally Healthy helps!

Emotional changes in one’s life are not limited to mental or psychological consequences, but also have plenty of physical ramifications. When you feel something strongly, your body begins to be involved in your emotional state.

When your muscles are added to the emotional mix and your feelings you discover that every emotional state has its unique postural balance and shape. A confident person always holds himself high, with a straight back and a face held up. An insecure person or someone who has given up slouches and slumps, and looks down most of the time. Your face can work beautifully as an index to the host of emotions in your mind, and your body follows suit. Angry people tend to have clenched fists.

A person with a nervous disposition may be fidgety and flighty all the time. A closed, suspecting person may have his hands clasped behind him with a mild hunch. So how do you keep your body fit emotionally? Simple. Be emotionally healthy! Being emotionally healthy also means managing day-to-day issues like stress, making and keeping friendships, changing bad habits. Being emotionally fit is the key to success in all aspects of life. If we do not care for ourselves, frustration, tension, anger, and poor health can develop. Physical fitness exercises help keep our bodies strong. Emotional fitness is about managing feelings. Do not bottle your feelings, but let them out.

Letting them out does not always mean yelling or shouting or pummelling someone- you could write out your feelings on paper and burn the sheets off, or punch a pillow or a punching bag till you feel a release, or go on a long run until you feel you’ve drained your negative emotion off. Practicing these exercises daily will strengthen your ability to control negative feelings. Physical exercise matters. A combination of proper nutrition with physical exercise will improve your emotional well-being. Deep breathing exercise and meditation help abundantly. Spend a little time each day or each week doing something you enjoy. Be grateful for all you have been given in life. S

ee that you get adequate sleep time every night. Or do take a nap every now and then. Exercise your creativity by singing, writing, drawing, painting, knitting, cooking or anything else that you love. You need not have to be a pro- just follow your passion because these activities are highly therapeutic. Forgive yourself and others. When you forgive, your whole body lets go with a sigh of relief. Have fun and LAUGH. Take time out to watch a comic show or play with kids, or even go back to your childhood, play about and watch cartoons! Music is a sure shot method for you to let go, as much as Dance. Enjoy your emotional well-being, and let it flow to your body, to let you bask in the glory of Physical well-being.

VISUALIZATION

The real healing power resides within oneself, and any method that serves to arouse that inherent power will tend toward the cure. “I am completely healed” is an effective phrase to get the power of your mind working to heal your body. Our mind, specially the subconscious is a miraculous tool. Any disturbance in the mind causes disturbance in the body. If everything in the Universe is made of energy, and it can never be destroyed or created but can be transformed, then it is possible that thoughts can become reality. Your mind is an extremely powerful instrument that can be either a friend or foe. The critical factors that determine how healthy or how sick you are- your attitude, your social networks, and your beliefs.
When you believe something very strongly, you will resonate with that belief, both consciously and unconsciously. Since your unconscious mind interfaces with your body and immune system, the right sorts of beliefs can really activate your body’s healing powers.
Visualization, a form of self-hypnosis, is a tool anyone can use to help foster healing. It is based on the idea that your body and mind are connected. There is no perfect way to do visualization, each one’s experience is uniquely their own.
To enter into visualisation enter into a meditative state by gentle breathing exercise. The following complete the process.
  1.          Focus on relaxing all your muscles (head to toe, toe to head, etc.).
  2.          Imagine yourself in a very peaceful and relaxing environment, totally at peace.
  3.          Bring to mind a scene that soothes and calms you.
  4.         Mentally transport yourself to this scene.
  5.          Relax your body and let go of worrisome thoughts.
  6.       Now scan your body for areas of tension. If you notice an area of tension, breathe into the area and as you breathe out imagine releasing the tension. If the tension persists, tighten the area and hold it for several seconds then let it relax
  7. Call for your God or guardian angels to heal you. Visualise healing take place for example if it is a pain visualise the healer healing the affected cells and bathing the site of pain with white healing light. You can ask for guidance on something that is concerning you. This guidance may come from within you or from anyone you want to ask.
  8. Once you are ready, you can come back from this favourite place of yours. Be with yourself for sometime breathing gently, before opening your eyes

THOUGHT AND ITS EFFECTS

Negative thoughts are caused by ingrained patterns related to our own beliefs: regarding self-esteem, security, money, people, life etc. Positive thoughts and attitudes have been found to contribute to physical health and emotional well-being, whereas negative thinking lead to adverse physical and mental health effects. Disease and health are rooted in thought. Sickly thoughts will express themselves through a sickly body. Stress that’s left unchecked can contribute to health problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity and diabetes. Optimists have higher levels of disease-fighting cell activity. Any negative emotion that is not fully experienced leaves behind negative remnants. When we think negative, we attract negative emotions and events. Your body responds to your conscious, your subconscious thoughts and to the consciousness of other people.  Positive and happy thoughts build up your body with vitality. When you generate positive thoughts energy begins to circulate easily in your body. When energy is able to circulate easily within your body, it begins to heal and strengthen your organs and all parts of your body.
Traditional Chinese Medicines associates emotional problems to specific organ functions: they are as follows The Liver can be affected by anger or frustration, The Lungs can be affected by sadness, the Heart can be affected by excess excitement, The Spleen and Pancreas can be affected by worry, The Kidneys can be affected by fear or shock.
Positive thinking leads to increased life span, increased immunity level, better psychological and physical well-being, reduced risk of death from cardiovascular disease, can cope better during hardships and times of stress. Every problem has a limited life span .They will get resolved given enough time. Relax, engage in a personal hobby, try something new or pamper yourself. Creative visualization helps obstacles turn into opportunities. Relaxation techniques, meditation, and balancing blocked chakras help clear the mind of the negative clutter.

Clearing Clutter

A cluttered mind is very bad and depresses and lowers ones energy levels. Clutter prevents the flow of Chi (energy) and needs to be cleared. While everyone is affected by events from their past, some people are affected to the point that it prevents them from moving ahead to the future. The trouble is our minds can get clogged up with negative thoughts from a range of sources.
To begin releasing those bags, start by simply saying to yourself, “I am letting go of all of these old burdens. I am ready and willing to let it go.” You don’t even need to know what the burdens are. When you begin releasing, you will feel lighter. Similarly when emotions come up for you to release, just experience the emotion and let it go. When you work continuously using subconscious mind power techniques, you begin to remove all these old and not supporting data and make a huge clean of your entire mental storehouse.
You need to start clearing out the old stuff you are holding on to in order to make room for new things to flow into your life. The Water Meditation (seeMeditation Room) can be practised. Never assume or judge others. It’s important to love yourself thoroughly. Be grateful for the things you have. Laughter, yawning, crying, and even singing facilitates the expression of a variety of feelings. These natural exercises cleanse the body, mind and soul so that we can maintain a healthy balance.
Yoga therapy tries to re-establish the inner balance by various means, working from the gross to the subtle.
Bach flowers White Chestnut, Walnut, Vervain help us relax our over-active mind and makes us realise our health and well-being are more important than our ambitions and desires.
Dandelion is the remedy to take when mental tensions are creating tensions in the system.
Aroma oils Chamomile and Lavender help calm the mind. Burning camphor and cloves is believed to absorb all negativity in the surrounding while it enhances the positive.

LET GO OF ANGER:

Are you a grumpy chicken by disposition? Or does it take very little for you to fly into a rage? Here's something for you.

Anger is an energy which is your greatest enemy debilitating your health and producing negativity. To Anger is human, we all have a temper, and feel anger. Anger is hard to release. You have to cut the invisible black cord that connects you to the person you’re angry with. Anger begets more anger. All repressed emotion including anger explodes into a rage, either inward or outward. Here are a few tips on how you can get those heavy, burning feelings off your chest:
1. Write them down on a piece of paper, and then tear that paper into tiny pieces and throw them away or burn them.
2. Take responsibility for your anger. This allows you to connect with your anger and begin transforming it into a positive experience.
3. Give yourself permission to rant with a therapist or friend which heals  by diffusing negative energy.
4. Slow deep breathing works for anger. Breathe slowly and deeply. This resets our emotions into a calm pattern and clears our minds.
5. Use reason to stop anger. Anger serves no purpose.
6. When we smile we defuse many negative situations. By smiling we offer goodwill to others and this defuses the situation.
7. If we persistently ignore our anger, eventually we will be successful.
8. Smiling at your enemy or the problem makes half the power disappear at once.
9. Forgive whoever angered you let him go. Understand that in forgiveness, you are allowing yourself to be happy and move on.
10. Meditation, Tai chi and yoga helps.
11. Work off anger at the gym or with a punching bag.
GYAN MUDRA

15. Sitali Pranayama curbs anger. This is how you do it Roll your tongue like a straw, draw air in through the protruding tongue and exhale through the nose. If possible (not a must) swallow after each inhalation for a better cooling effect.
You can do the exercise whenever you need to rid yourself of anger.

Happiness

Let me ask you a question.
What is Happiness?
The first thing that pops into your mind is your answer.
For some, happiness is what you feel when what you want to happen happens. For some others, happiness is the smile on their little child’s face. For still others, happiness is a colour, a person, an event, a day, a memory, a gift, a moment, a story, a relationship, a place- anything.
But truly, do you know what it means to be happy and what it takes to achieve happiness?
Analyse the question and you will see that our basic needs are very limited. Our wants are what are unlimited. Think about it. You want a pizza, but you need food. You want a mansion, but you need a house.
The more wants you have the more problems you will have, for an unfulfilled want is the surest cause of unhappiness. Your happiness is your responsibility; don’t blame others if you are unhappy. It certainly is not enough to tell yourself to be happy. As long as we’re not happy with ourselves, we’re never really going to achieve happiness. The problems start when the weather of a dark passing emotion settles into the oppression of a gloomy emotional climate. Before this happens, it is up to each one of us, to use your own initiative, to put up your umbrellas. It is you who decide how you will respond to external circumstances. Achieving happiness is done through looking within ourselves and finding out what truly brings us joy in our lives. We want to be loved and accepted.
Happiness can be achieved by starting with the following:

  • Do not take anything personally. Brush of insults, but be receptive to constructive criticism.
  • Focus on the present, not the past or the future. Tomorrow will take care of itself.
  •  Laugh as often as possible.
  • Learn to accept that power to be happy is all in your hands.
  • Take some time each day to do something nice for yourself.
  • Having balance between our thoughts, words, and actions is crucial in finding happiness.
  • Maintaining your health is very important to achieve happiness.
  • Identify your talents and find opportunities to use them purposefully you will find happiness in what you do.
  • Practice forgiveness.
  • Express and share grief.
  • Make Somebody Else Happy.
  • Think positive.
  • If people would stop being miserable for 15 minutes by shutting their mind off (meditate and most important stop ruminating) then they would be happy.
  • By choosing to take responsibility for your own happiness you choose to succeed throughout your life.

AFFIRMATIONS

The use of positive affirmations is a technique to change that negative self-talk into something more positive. The goal with affirmations is to change your beliefs. Changing your beliefs will change your life. The problem with negative thoughts is that they can be self-fulfilling. The use of positive affirmations can successfully treat people with low self-esteem, depression, and other mental health conditions. Your positive attitude is the fuel for your success. Many people think that simply repeating a statement over and over again will make it true. This is unlikely. You need to apply positive healing affirmations daily to the root cause of the problem you are working on.
Think of the positive events in your life that your mind has reminded you of. Contemplate deeply and evaluate all of these events. In doing so, try to focus and find out all the things that make the event “positive”. To do this, introspect with a few questions- What is positive about this event? Why has the positive event transpired? What you have contributed towards the positive event? What have you derived from the positivity?
Once you’re done with that, take your mind down the opposite lane, and consider some negative events in your life. Go through a similar procedure.  Find out why the events were negative. Introspect and ask yourself the following- What is negative about this event? Why has the negative event transpired? Where did the negativity stem from? What have you contributed towards the negative event? What have you derived from the event? What are your feelings about the event?
Once you’ve done this, you will find yourself in a position where you understand most (if not necessarily all) aspects of the problem, event or negativity itself. At this stage, ask yourself if you are willing to accept any part you played in contributing towards negativity. When you are ready to accept your role in the negative event, you are ready to turn the event around, and make it positive. Ask yourself how this could be turned into a positive. For some, it could be a case of learning from experience. For some others, it could be a motivating factor to spur them into action in the productive direction.
This will help change the aspect of the problem from negative to positive. At this stage, you are ready to use your affirmation. Affirmations can either be spoken or be written down. Affirmations have to be done several times a day till such time that they become a reality.
The power of affirmations also lies in their repetition. Affirmations should be formed in the present tense, as if they are already happening. When making positive affirmations, be sure that they’re positive! Here’s an example. If you want to rid yourself of some pain, you should be affirming thus: “I am free of the pain”; “My tryst with the pain is over, I allow myself to release this pain.” “I have now released the pain” as opposed to: “I have no pain.” “I feel no pain”
Another technique that can be used is the mirror technique. Stand in front of a mirror. Look yourself directly in the eyes and say your affirmation loudly. Repeat each affirmation 10 to 15 times to yourself in the mirror. This will help drive it into you sub-conscious mind. Avoid “wanting” your affirmation as it means that you don’t already have it e.g “I want a healthy body” is a wrong affirmation. “I have a perfectly healthy body” would be the right way to affirm.
Using this powerful technology helps to improve your self- esteem, stay in recovery and improve the quality of your life.

PSYCHOSOMATIC CONDITIONS

Each emotional thought pattern is really an underlying cause of a physical illness, understanding the addressing the cause will help rid the body of the disease. The most frequent causes of illness are negative attitudes and emotions. Those who are vulnerable to falling prey to the suggestion that illness is contagious will attract illness because they expect to be sick as a result of circumstances. Every illness or disorder is actually your body trying to remind you to love yourself.  Our body reflects our emotions. We are made up of energy and if our grid gets injured the energy will be stored in a certain spot thereby hindering the free flow of energy in the meridian.
Illnesses and Their Hidden Meanings:
  • Liver problems are associated with deep anger and chronic fault finding with others or yourself.
  • Lung problems are associated with an inability to take in life or being smothered.
  • Skin problems are associated with being out of touch with ourselves or others or being too sensitive.
  • Heart Diseases are associated with people who tend to over commit and push themselves too hard.
  • Cancer occurs when there are strong feelings of abandonment, betrayal and fear of being alone.
  • Diabetes is caused when there is a chronic feeling of despair and hopelessness.
  • Headaches come from Self-criticism- Not wanting to accept what is going on.
  • Being Overweight happens when there is fear and there is a need for emotional protection.
To rid yourself of your illness note where in the body is the illness or disease is lodged, what function that part of the body has, converse with that body part, find out what you should do to get rid of the issue. Trust your intuition here. Once you clear old issues, it gets easier to clear the newer ones as you are aware of what they are.  Your mental state is a responsible for your good health. You can choose to adjust it in the direction of perfect health, or in the direction of illness, the choice is yours.

NEGATIVE RELATIONSHIPS

“We are what we attract.” Some people attract negative relationships because they send out certain energy that draws them. Every moment you have a choice either to be at peace or to be in resistance. When you are at peace you attract positive energy and when you resist you create negative vibes which reflect back on your being. People are drawn to what is inside of them; they will feel connected to people who give off what they feel. When this occurs, a person will find himself in one negative relationship after the other. The person should realize that what he has been experiencing is a pattern. People never change. It’s you who has to make changes to lead a better quality of life. When you’re transmitting positivity, you are attracting like-minded positive people. If you seem to have suffered the same types of relationship problems over and over again, you need to look within yourself. Relationships are there for our healing and growth, even though they have the potential to bring us joy, they can also bring up parts of our past than can cause us great pain. Let go off the past or your perceptions of it, then your relationships will begin to change and relationships that honour that we truly are will start to appear.
“Judge nothing, you will be happy. Forgive everything, you will be happier. Love everything, you will be happiest.” ~Sri Chinmoy.
Remember, positive attracts positive. Forgiveness is so ultimately important to the law of attraction. Relationships with others start with the type of relationship you have with yourself. Forgive yourself and others. Learn to love yourself only then will you start loving others and love will also flow into your life. Never hold onto your past, release it for somewhere it is your past which is responsible for your present state of being. All of the parts of ourselves that cause us pain and we have repressed, start to show up in other people. Self love and Self respect are the keys in having healthy relationships and the keys to attracting quality people into our lives. Your relationship destiny depends on your own energy, so make it positive and see how your relationships soar.

MEDITATION

With the hectic pace of modern life, many people feel stressed and over-worked. Accumulated stress is the cause of illness. By eliminating stress, you allow your mind to calm down thereby allowing the body to function with maximum effectiveness. Meditation is the best tool to overcome stress. Meditation is a self healing process. Deeper the meditation, the deeper would be the healing. Meditation helps an individual overcome negative emotions to facilitate a calm peaceful mind and a healthy and stress free body. If we don’t attend to the disease of the mind we may find that stress can lead to disease of the body. You can practice meditation wherever you are — whether you’re out for a walk, riding the bus, or even in the middle of a difficult business meeting. Meditation techniques involve a process of transforming yourself, your thoughts, and recognizing the negative thoughts, and changing them into positive ones.
The different types of meditation are:
  • Guided meditation. In this method you form mental images of places or situations you find relaxing. Try to use as many senses as possible, such as smells, sights, sounds and textures. You may be led through this process by a guide.
  • Mantra meditation. In this type of meditation, you silently repeat a calming word as a chant, to prevent distracting thoughts.
  • Mindfulness meditation is about focusing on what is happening around you and being aware of your thoughts and feelings during the process of meditating. Be open to your true feelings but don’t judge your thoughts. You can start by watching your breath and then move your attention to the thoughts in your mind and even the sounds and sights surrounding you. The bottom line is not to analyse or judge anything.
  • Transcendental meditation. You use a mantra, such as a word, sound or phrase repeatedly silently, to eliminate all thoughts from your mind. You focus only on your mantra to achieve a state of perfect stillness.
  • Yoga. You perform a series of postures with controlled breathing exercises to promote a flexible body and a calm mind. As you move through poses that require a lot of concentration, you focus less on your problems and more on the moment.
  • Walking Meditation.  Walking Meditation, as the name tells, involves walking. You just have to focus on your feet while walking.
Benefits of Meditation: Meditation Lowers blood pressure, improves the immune system, increases body vitality, controls insomnia and improves the overall health of the body. It contributes towards emotional stability, reduced anger, developed intuition, peace of mind, induces ability to focus, and reduces stress. Most importantly meditation brings about harmony and realization of self.

The Importance of Honing your Intuition

You hold the key to a successful life within your mind. “You have to leave the city of your comfort and go into the wilderness of your intuition.  What you’ll discover will be wonderful.  What you’ll discover is yourself” Alan Alda. If you think something outside of yourself is the cause of your problem, and you search for the solution outside of yourself you never really will find it. Look within yourself to find your strength. We gain strength through practice and making efforts to learn from mistakes.
Tap into your internal power to make decisions and solve problems. Looking to others to solve your problems creates a victim mentality where you believe other people are to blame for the situation you are in. You have inside you the strength to move forward and handle adversity all you have to do is have faith in yourself. You have the ability to solve problems instantly if you trust yourself. Intuition sends us messages in different forms all the time. Learning to follow your intuition can sometimes feel a bit like “living on the edge”.
As we follow our inner guidance, wonderful things are will begin to unfold for us, things that we may not even imagine. At a certain point you need to go with a gut feeling. To develop your intuition meditate and stay positive. By meditating you calm your mind and by staying positive you become more positive and understand that you will get the answer to your problem. Affirming, “I willingly trust the intuitive messages I receive through my thoughts and imagination.” will help. Open yourself fully to finding your own understanding and germinate the seeds of your creativity.

Understand the Yogic Diet

Yoga is defined as that practice which leads to anushasanam, which means the governing of one’s subtle nature. Yoga Diet is an essential aspect of Yoga practice.
Food according to yogis is traditionally classified according to its effect on the body and mind, using the three GunasSattva (the quality of love, light and life), Raja (the quality of activity and passion, lacking stability) and Tamas (the quality of darkness and inertia, dragging us into ignorance and attachment). Sattvic food calms the mind, sharpens the intellect and is ideal for spiritual growth. It includes most organic fruits, nuts, seeds, vegetables, whole grains, honey and milk.
Rajasic foods are over-stimulating and bring restlessness of mind. Rajasic foods include most processed foods, overly spicy food, coffee, tea eggs, garlic, onion, meat and chocolate. Eating too fast or with a disturbed mind is also considered Rajasic.
Tamasic food produces lethargy and dullness of the mind. Foods in this category include meat, eggs, alcohol and mushrooms as well as food that are charred, fermented or stale. Taking drugs or overeating is also Tamasic
A diet that is conducive to the practice of Yoga and spiritual progress can be rightly termed Yogic Diet. A real yogi eats to live, rather than living to eat. You don’t have to be a vegetarian to do yoga, but with practice as you become more aware of your body, you’ll find that eating meat makes you feel heavy and lethargic. A vegetarian diet, on the other hand, helps you maintain the energized feeling you get from your yoga practice. Try to Eat Fresh, Whole Organic Foods. Many believe it’s difficult to switch to a vegetarian diet. It is not necessary for you to stop eating non vegetarian food all at once. But you can gradually reduce these foods from your diet. Yogis eat to satisfy hunger. In yoga, a person should have minimal things in life, possessions for example. This makes living simpler and more enjoyable. Don’t overindulge.  A traditional guideline is to fill half your stomach with food and a quarter with water, leaving part empty. Try to Eat Fresh, Whole Organic Foods.
Pray and meditate before you cook, so you’ll cook with a centered, positive attitude and loving heart. Practice gratitude, appreciation and thankfulness as you cook. Diet can influence the mind and change the personality. The Sattvic diet allows yoga practitioners to lead noble, meditative and peaceful lives free of over-stimulation and debilitating negative emotions.

HEALTHY EATING DURING PREGNANCY

Eating for two is not necessary during pregnancy but it is really important to eat a healthy diet. Being pregnant should not be used as an excuse to pig out. During pregnancy your body is able to absorb more of the nutrients you eat. Your body becomes more efficient when you’re pregnant, and makes even better use of the energy you get from your food.  Being pregnant means you are responsible for your baby’s health by choosing foods and drinks that are right for him. Your baby is totally dependent on you for getting enough vitamins and nutrients. A well-balanced diet should contain something from all the food groups. Eat a variety of foods; minimize extra foods that have empty calories. . Eating the wrong foods and overindulging will leave you piling up pounds which will find you having a hard time trying to get rid of, once your baby arrives. To avoid constipation, eat lots of fibre-rich foods such as fruit, vegetables, wholemeal bread and cereal and ensure that you are drinking enough of water. Eat high iron foods. Do not restrict your diet during pregnancy. Don’t skip meals. If your appetite is poor try eating small amounts of food throughout the day. You may feel more hungry than usual, but there is no need to eat for two. The women who had gained too much weight were four times as likely to be obese and more than twice as likely to be overweight.

ALKALINE FOOD

There are many benefits to eating an alkaline diet. Over-acidity in the body causes chronic health issues, whereas an alkaline diet helps to prevent these same problems. The pH level of your blood is generally between 7.35 and 7.45. When your body is more acidic, it is more susceptible to disease. A pH of 0 is completely acidic, and a pH of 14 completely alkaline. A pH of 7 is neutral. The stomach has a pH ranging from 1.35-3.5. It should be acidic to aid in digestion. Blood must always be slightly alkaline, with a pH of 7.35 to 7.45. The body’s pH level can also affect a cell’s ability to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is important to the body’s energy level. The benefits of alkaline food are tremendous; it helps increase the oxygen supply in the body that is important for the proper functioning fluids in the bloodstream and different vital organs. It helps in renewing and restoring the proper functions of the different organs as well as prevents the build-up of lactic acid that is detrimental to our health and it helps in optimal absorption of the different nutrients, vitamins and minerals. If the body’s cells become acidic, the cells will begin to deteriorate. Most vegetables like beet, baked potatoes, cabbage, cauliflower, celery, carrots, turnips and gourds are high producers of alkaline ash. Citrus fruits, apples, raisins, bananas, pineapples, nectarines, dates and blackberries are producers of alkaline ash. Most spices and seasonings like cinnamon, mustard, ginger and chilli pepper are alkaline. Water, fresh juices, almonds, chestnuts and tofu are also alkaline.  Alkaline foods (fruits and vegetables) can be health promoting. Limiting sugar and processed foods is known to aid in healing the body. However, a word of caution: like with everything else, one must not go overboard. Having too much of the one and too little of the other can be bad, because if your body is too acidic you can become sick and if your body is too alkaline also you can also become sick. So it is important to strike a balance.

COMBINING YOUR FOOD PROPERLY

Trouble in the stomach occurs when your body is tasked with digesting foods that require different processing times and enzymes all at once. Protein foods require a highly acidic environment for digestion while carbohydrates and fats require a more alkaline medium. Anytime two or more foods are eaten at the same time, and those foods require opposite conditions for digestion, the digestive process is compromised.  A balanced diet that consists of varied foods is important to provide all the essential nutrients your body requires for good health. Combining certain foods provides specific vitamins and minerals that enhance the absorption of other essential nutrients.

Eat fruits by themselves as they are the easiest foods for your body to digest and shouldn’t be combined with vegetables, proteins or grains, which consume more of your digestive energy. After eating fruit wait for 30-60 minutes before taking something else. Foods rich in Protein can be combined with most vegetables, but should not be combined with carbohydrates, acids, fats, or sugars during one meal. Starches should not be combined with acids and sugars including fruits. Starches usually combine well with vegetables. Combine grains with non starchy vegetables. Potatoes and rice, for instance, isn’t a good match. When a carbohydrate is eaten with a sugar, such as a cooked grain cereal with apple or banana, the carbohydrate and the sugar will both ferment. The result is gas and flatulence in the system. After a meal of grains, your body needs two to three hours to complete digestion. Your body takes two to four hours to digest a protein meal. Fats can be eaten with proteins and acids. Starches should not be combined with proteins. Some foods digest primarily in the stomach, others in the small intestine.

To plan a good food-combined meal, aim to eat either:  one protein meal with vegetables or salad, one starch meal with vegetables or salad, a fruit only meal.

The downside of wrong dieting

So you think you can diet? Well. Here's something you SHOULD know!

High-protein, low-carb diet has become a popular method of losing weight. This will make you lose weight, but in a very unhealthy way.
One of the reasons you lose weight on a high protein/low carbohydrate diet is that when the body is deprived of glucose from carbs, it turns to fat for fuel, thus you lose weight but at the expense of your health. The breakdown products of burning large quantities of body fat for fuel are called ketones. They will begin to accumulate in the body. A build-up of ketones in the body can cause damage to organs such as the liver and the kidneys. The increased ketones affect the body’s balance of acids and alkalines, causing a condition called acidosis.

When the levels of ketones in the body reach dangerous proportions, the dieter finds herself in the same state as a diabetic who has not used any insulin. Unless immediate treatment is applied, he/she can slip into a coma. The increase in the amount of protein consumed from meat and dairy products, raises the levels of uric acid and urea in the blood. These are toxic by-products of protein breakdown and metabolism. The body eliminates this uric acid and urea by pumping lots of water into the kidneys and urinary tract to help it flush out. This leads to a loss of essential minerals from the body, including calcium. The high intake of protein leaches calcium from the bones, leading to osteoporosis. Following this diet will lead to loss of muscle tissue. Metabolizing protein does require a higher amount of water than carbohydrates or fats, so it’s important to consume a lot of water when on a high protein diet. Carbohydrates such as fruit, vegetables, grains and cereals, are the main source of dietary fibre in the diet; eliminating these foods will cause constipation, which in the long-run can lead to diverticulitis and irritable bowel syndrome.  Balanced, low fat diets are the right choice for weight loss!

What your food cravings mean?

It is a quiet afternoon and you are curled up with a book. Suddenly, you want something sweet. Your mind is craving it, and every pore of your existence wants you to reach and grab the bar of chocolate that is warming the bench in the fridge.

Before you decide to battle the symptom, take a moment to understand where it's coming from.

Stress is said to be the main cause of emotional eating. Lots of cravings can be psychological in nature. If you teach yourself to deal with stress in healthy ways, the cravings for unhealthy food will diminish.  It is very necessary for you to face the things that triggered the stress, allow yourself to feel and experience the stressful emotions and learn to process them. Chances are that you maybe abusing yourself with food. You can be craving unhealthy foods when certain emotions surface. The reason is that we often use food to “numb” ourselves whenever we experience emotions that we don’t like.

Energy-wise, craving sweet food indicates a weakness in the Earth energy. People who crave sweet food are hungry for love, passion and excitement. You may feel shame because you are overweight, so you reach for sweet food then. Craving for salty food corresponds to weakness in the Water element. If you crave salt, this could indicate that you have adrenal exhaustion. Craving for fried and greasy food indicates an imbalance in the wood element, to be more precise, it indicates“Liver Qi stagnation”.

People who crave high fat foods feel empty inside. Craving pungent foods indicate an imbalance in the metal element. It shows us that our weakness is to do with drawing boundaries, dealing with grief, and letting negative emotions go. If you are craving a “comfort food” you used to crave for before, or something special your mother used to make when you were little it indicates that you are having a psychologically-rooted craving. Identify your triggers and build awareness about your condition. Writing a diary each day can help you analyze yourself. Try massage as it stimulates feel good neurotransmitters. Emotional eating doesn’t have to persist. You can break free from the chains binding you and food.

HOLDING ONTO BAGGAGE

Letting go of “stuff” can be a difficult and challenging obstacle for all of us. Most of us carry around some mental and emotional baggage which might include views and beliefs about others, ourselves that we would do better to let go of.
“All the art of living lies in a fine mingling of letting go and holding on.” ~Havelock Ellis
Life has its ups and downs however, that does not mean that we have to hold on to it. Many people hold onto to this baggage often without much conscious realization and then wonder why they are so tired, stressed and depressed. Metaphysical baggage needs to be checked. At some point that baggage becomes so unbearably heavy that we just stop moving forward and start living in the past. Taking the risk to let go of the past and truly live in the present moment is the way to true happiness. Learn from your mistakes then wash your hands of it. Focus on positive events and make sure that your brain remembers them as vividly as it does negative ones. Lightening the emotional load you carry with you will allow you to step into a life you are in love with.

You are GOOD.

What do you do when someone does something that hurts you? Do you retaliate in the same coin and sometimes hurt them more than you were, by them? Or do you shy away and spend time in isolation, perhaps even crying about the situation?

I recently stumbled upon a beautiful piece that speaks about an African Tribe. When someone does something hurtful and wrong, they take the person to the center of town, and the entire tribe comes and surrounds him. For two days they’ll tell the man every good thing he has ever done. The tribe believes that every human being comes into the world as GOOD, each of us desiring safety, love, peace, happiness.
But sometimes in the pursuit of those things people make mistakes. The community sees misdeeds as a cry for help. They band together for the sake of their fellow man to hold him up, to reconnect him with his true Nature, to remind him who he really is, until he fully remembers the truth from which he’d temporarily been disconnected: “I AM GOOD”.

Isn't that a fantastic message? All of us have the capacity to do good things and bad things. All of us can do the right things, and also, at the same time, make mistakes. But here is the deal: one bad thing, one mistake or one wrong thing does not make us inherently bad. So reflect on yourself and think about the good that you have done every time you feel inclined to be rude, or to hurt someone, or to say something mean that you can't take back.

MUSCLES AND EMOTIONS

There is a relationship between muscles and motions. When an emotion is not expressed properly, it will lodge itself in specific areas which will then lead to muscle soreness.

“We often block trauma with the mind but hold emotions in the body,” Karol Ward.

Emotions tone and program muscles and other connective tissues, they continue doing so for as long as an emotion is present in our system. This most naturally will affect your posture.

Anger moves up the back of the body along the spine, over the top of the head, and out through the eyes and mouth, down the arms and goes through the hands. Note that when you are you instinctively tighten your fist. If you observe yourself closely, the next time you are angry, you will note tightening of your jaw.  Blocking the release of sadness can lead to very tight throat muscles and a chronic, painful ache in the throat. All our negative emotions cause a shortening or increased contraction of our flexor muscles. We try to protect ourselves from having deep uncomfortable feelings by tightening muscles. Layers of tension develop. Blood does not flow well into a contracted muscle.  Healing cannot occur in a state of panic, fear, or anger.  Reduce your level of muscle tension with relaxation techniques such as meditation, yoga, or progressive muscle relaxation. Remember that stress is additive.

The release of these connective tissue restrictions brings about a relief from pain and negative emotions.  This is one of the reasons yoga and tai-chi can be so therapeutic. Be honest about your feelings. Clearing blocked emotions can profoundly impact your physical and emotional health.

Why should you exercise?

Image from Here
If you thought physical exercise would just help you stay slim, fit and healthy physically, think again.

What you hear less about most often, is the fact that exercise has tremendous mental and psychological benefits. The first of these is an improved self-esteem. Exercise decreases the stress hormones in your body such as cortisol, and increases hormones such as endorphins which release adrenaline, serotonin, and dopamine which are the body’s natural feel good chemicals. When these are released through exercise, your mood gets boosted. Take a person who exercises regularly and someone who doesn't. You'll be able to see a marked difference between the two in their manner of working and in their demeanour - with the regular exercising person being everything right from cheerful and happy to energetic and more result oriented. Confidence comes more naturally to one who exercises regularly. Don't believe me? Try it yourself!

Another benefit of physical exercise is the capacity to tackle pain. Exercising as I mentioned, releases endorphins. Besides being hormones that can help your energy levels, they are also great in masking pain by sedating the pain itself. Instead of taking an external agent in the form of tablets, or applying them in the form of ointments and sprays, things like menstrual cramps and asymptomatic body aches can be set alright with the help of a good exercise regime.

Lastly, Exercise alleviates your mood. When you are physically active with any form of exercise, the most immediate effect is the increased flow of oxygen and a rapid delivery of nutrients to the brain. Physical activity can help people recover from depressions faster. For people with mild or moderate depression, just 30 minutes of intense exercise can be as effective as medication for improving their moods. Simply put, those who get more exercise may become less affected by the stress of life!

CORE STRENGTH

Core strength is essential to build metabolism, burn fat and boost overall strength and vitality. The core generally refers to the abdominal muscles group, but also involves gluteus medius and lumbar muscles and as the postural muscles of the back. The core muscles provide support for the three lower chakras. Without this these chakras become unbalanced, which lowers energy levels and causes emotional issues. The body’s core muscles provide the foundation for all activities of daily life. A weak core results in a weak digestive fire.  On a mental level, your self-esteem, self-assurance and self-reliance become stronger by working on your core. Strong core reduces back pain, improves postural imbalances and boosts self-esteem, confidence and willpower; helps achieve greater flexibility and better balance. With a strong core you are less prone to back pain and the structure of the body comes into better alignment around gravity. Yoga teaches you breathing techniques which increases lung capacity, clears blockages and even involves stomach muscles. This helps develop core strength. Having a strong body is essential to finding total harmony in all aspects of your life. Core strength is very important because your core is how your body maintains its balance.

Bendy and flexible? Yes, thank you!

Fitness flexibility is the amount of natural flexibility you require for the normal tasks and activities you do during the course of your life. Physical flexibility is important during one’s adult years because it not only helps one to stay in shape but also prevents injuries from occurring. Flexibility is the ability of the body to bend without breaking.   As a person ages they begin to slow down and movement becomes a difficult. Lack of mobility, is the primary reason for this. Having a very sedentary lifestyle will accelerate the process of losing natural flexibility, while being active, exercising, and moving around will keep you limber. We are born flexible, it is remaining flexible that is the problem. Loss of flexibility happens when our collagen structure begins to change.   Some people are just naturally more flexible than others. Flexibility exercises will produce and sustain a broader base of motion in people and help safeguard them against injury. Flexibility training is broadly accepted as a way to increase joint mobility. Stretching should be a part of your daily routine. After you exercise, while your body is still warm, you should complete a full stretching regimen. Yoga, Pilates and Tai Chi are great in helping you to increase your flexibility. One of the greatest benefits of stretching is that you’re able to increase your range of motion, which means your limbs and joints can move further without discomfort or injury.Flexibility exercise contributes to mental health benefits.  An inflexible body could be due to a rigid personality and an inflexible mind. A tense body leads to a tense mind. We hold our emotions in our muscles as well as our minds. Once you release the negativity from your mind, you will find obtaining flexibility is very much easier.
